MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The U.S. army carried out an airstrike focusing on Islamic State militants southeast of Bosaso on Friday, in coordination with Somalia’s federal authorities, amid ongoing counterinsurgency operations within the area, AFRICOM stated on Saturday.
The strike coincided with floor clashes between Puntland regional forces and ISIS fighters within the Mirale space of the Al Miskad Mountains, the place Somali troops are intensifying efforts to dismantle the group’s entrenched presence.
In current months, Puntland forces have recaptured a lot of villages from the group, ending years of tacit tolerance that had allowed ISIS to maintain an extortion racket throughout main city facilities within the semi-autonomous area.
The operation marks a big escalation in Puntland’s marketing campaign to remove ISIS footholds in Somalia’s mountainous north.
