MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s authorities stated that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is not going to have interaction in a gathering with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed until the latter rescinds a contentious sea entry cope with the breakaway northern area of Somaliland, signed in January.
This comes after Kenyan President William Ruto introduced on Saturday that he, together with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, would spearhead efforts to facilitate a direct assembly between the leaders of Ethiopia and Somalia, the primary since Addis Ababa’s controversial MoU with Somaliland.
“Somalia welcomes the regional leaders’ efforts to keep up peace, safety, and stability within the HoA,” stated Somali ambassador to Tanzania Ilyas Ali Hassan.
“Nonetheless, its place stays unchanged: until the January 1, 2024, MoU is said null and void and Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity should be revered.”
Turkey had beforehand sought to mediate talks between Somalia and Ethiopia in a bid to resolve their dispute over a stretch of land alongside the Purple Sea, which Somaliland had leased to Ethiopia for the development of a naval base. The transfer, which triggered outrage in Mogadishu, was decried as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Nonetheless, all efforts to dealer a decision led to dismal failure, as two rounds of negotiations in Ankara yielded no progress.
