MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The assembly of Somalia’s Nationwide Consultative Council was adjourned till October 27, as leaders had been unable to forge a consensus on essential points pertaining to the administration of the upcoming regional elections.
The council, which beforehand included the Somali President, the leaders of the 5 regional states, the Prime Minister, and the Mayor of Mogadishu, confronted a big setback as two of its key members—particularly, the Presidents of Jubaland and Puntland—boycotted the discussions.
Whereas different regional states acquiesced to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s proposal for a one-year time period extension and the scheduling of regional elections for late-2025, a proper communiqué couldn’t be issued as a result of lack of broad consensus ensuing from the absence of the 2 most influential state leaders in Somalia.
In an announcement on Wednesday, Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre introduced that discussions would reconvene on October 26; nonetheless, he didn’t make clear whether or not his administration would make efforts to reengage the leaders of Jubaland and Puntland within the council.
