Mogadishu, December 17, 2023; The Somali Nationwide Military formally took over the safety of the Presidential Palace and the Federal Parliament of Somalia at the moment, ending the 16-year-long presence of the African Union transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) within the nation’s seat of energy.
The handover ceremony at Villa Somalia was attended by the Somali Nationwide Military Commander Common Ibrahim Sheikh Muhidiin, the Presidential Palace Chief of Employees Mr. Abdihakim Mohamed Yusuf, and the representatives of the African Union and the United Nations in Somalia.
President Mohamud praised the 77th Brigade of the Nationwide Military for taking up the safety accountability of the nation’s leaders and mentioned that this step reveals the restoration of the capability and energy of the Somali Nationwide Armed Forces.
Common Muhidiin visited the troops guarding the Presidential Palace and expressed his gratitude to the AMISOM commanders and troopers who’ve been supporting the safety of the nation’s management for a few years.
ATMIS has been deployed in Somalia since 2007 to assist the Somali authorities combat in opposition to the militant group Al-Shabaab and restore stability and peace in Somalia. The mission has regularly lowered its troops and transferred safety obligations to the Somali safety forces as a part of the transition plan agreed in 2017.
The handover of the Presidential Palace marks the completion of the transition course of and the total assumption of safety by the Somali Nationwide Military. The ATMIS spokesperson mentioned that the mission will proceed to offer coaching, mentoring, and logistical assist to the Somali safety forces till its mandate expires in 2024.
