Mogadishu (PP Information Desk) — Abdifatah Dahir, a former MP of the Somali bicameral legislature, has proposed a confederal system as the one method for the “Somaliland administration to resign secession and embrace the Union”. Dahir contends that the political impasse in Somalia implies the failure of federal governance. “The amendments to the Provisional Structure had been expedited illegally,” stated Dahir.
In response to a query posed by Somali Cable TV about whether or not the MPs and Senators “voted on the amendments since they had been elected by their constituencies”, Dahir replied: “If we don’t interact in fruitless debate, we will say they weren’t elected. The check of amendments to the structure is that if MPs and Senators can promote the amended structure to their constituencies. To provide you an instance, our MPs and Senators from Somaliland can not go to territories managed by the Somaliland Administration and persuade individuals to just accept the amended structure.” Dahir added that the aim of MPs and Senators is to take care of political unity till a complete political settlement is reached. “As such, they can not endorse constitutional amendments,” he concluded.
Dahir, who was chosen as an MP representing Somaliland earlier than the 2022 presidential election in Mogadishu, raised alarms concerning the viability of the Somali political system. “To be frank, Somaliland declared secession way back and isn’t part of the Federal Authorities. Puntland has misplaced confidence within the authorities. Two main clans, Darod and Isaq, are disaffected with the state of governance. Rahanweyn of the Southwest could comply with swimsuit,” stated Dahir, who views a confederal system as the one means to carry Somaliland again into the Union fold.
