MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his Kenyan President William Ruto engaged in essential talks on the transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Assist Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), wrapping up Mohamud’s week-long tour of countries contributing troops to the mission targeted on restoring stability in Somalia.
The Kenyan chief, whose troops are deployed in Somalia to fight the militant group Al-Shabaab, urged the Somali president to safe sustainable funding for the brand new peacekeeping mission from the worldwide group, following monetary constraints that plagued the outgoing mission and hindered its effectiveness.
This week, the Somali president performed a diplomatic tour of troop-contributing nations to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), partaking with Kenya, Djibouti, Burundi, and Uganda whereas omitting Ethiopia attributable to rising tensions, as he sought help for the inclusion of Egyptian forces within the new mission and pushed for the exclusion of Ethiopia, which is lobbying to retain its troops in Somalia.
