Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Minister of International Affairs and Worldwide Cooperation, H.E. Amb. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi Ahmed, departed for New York on Monday, main the delegation of the Federal Republic of Somalia to take part within the 78th session of the UN Normal Meeting, which is scheduled to carry elections for membership of the Safety Council on June 6.
Efficient January 1, 2025, Somalia, alongside different newly elected non-permanent members of the Safety Council, will start their phrases, serving till December 31, 2026.
Somalia’s candidacy for the open African seat, devoted to the East Africa sub-region, stays uncontested, aligning with the rotational framework of the Africa Group.
The announcement of Somalia’s candidacy dates again to 2018 and was formally endorsed on the forty fourth Odd Session of the AU Government Council in February 2024.
Somalia, a member of the United Nations since its independence in 1960, has a historical past of engagement with the Safety Council, holding a seat in the course of the 1971-1972 time period and contributing to discussions and selections addressing world peace and safety points.
