Mogadishu (PP Remark) — Ethiopia is reportedly to hitch the East African Neighborhood. The East African Neighborhood Protocol on Co-operation in Defence Affairs will grant Ethiopia a chance to make use of Somalia’s coasts for naval functions. “The Armed Forces of the Accomplice States shall as mutually agreed occasionally: (a) use one another’s navy airfield, seaports and land-based services for visits, coaching, workouts, refuelling, navigation and for different acceptable navy functions…” reads article 16 of the Protocol.
This may have a knock-down impact on the unlawful maritime Memorandum of Understanding that the Prime Minister of Ethiopia signed with the President of Somaliland Administration in January 2024.
In 2024 Somalia grew to become a member of the East African Neighborhood. For Ethiopia to hitch the EAC a full dedication to abiding by the Structure of the EAC ought to present itself in an unequivocal affirmation of respecting the territorial integrity and the political unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
