Faqi, a Federal MP from South West State of Somalia, criticised amendments to Somalia’s provisional structure motivated by a want to deal with what proponents of the constitutional overhaul view as an abuse of illustration privileges by parliamentarians and senators, a refined reference to monetising MPs’ and Senators’ votes each time Villa Somalia needs to dismiss a Prime Minister. This example creates a vicious circle of No Confidence Motions in opposition to a Prime Minister who falls out with the President.
On 30 March 2024 the bicameral legislature of Somalia ratified 4 amendments to the provisional structure into which President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has signed into legislation. Puntland State authorities, former Presidents and Prime Ministers denounced the amendments as unilateral and in violation of the established pointers that stress bottom-up consensus and credible consultations with the civil society.
“It is a regrettable scenario, particularly in Somalia the place accountability is just about non-existent. Because of this, Somali politics now finds itself in uncharted territory. The longer term function of the parliament stays unsure, leaving us to ponder what lies forward. Whether or not this alteration will finally profit the nation is unsure, however one factor is simple: the parliament has successfully rendered itself powerless” tweeted Dr Faqi.
